CHOI Hair Transplant Technique

The CHOI hair transplant is an advanced implantation technique that uses a specific implanter known as the CHOI pen. This method is used during the second phase of an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant, at the stage where grafts are implanted, allowing them to be inserted in a single motion.

What is the CHOI transplant (CHOI implanter) ?

The CHOI transplant takes its name from the Korean surgeon who developed this innovative implanter. It is an implantation method integrated into an FUE hair transplant, used exclusively to insert grafts after extraction. Unlike other methods that require two separate steps (incision followed by implantation), the CHOI pen allows both actions to be performed in a single motion.

The CHOI implanter resembles a pen, with a tip designed to create a micro-incision in the scalp while simultaneously placing the graft. This technique enables more precise implantation and minimizes trauma to the scalp, promoting faster recovery.

In an FUE transplant using the CHOI implanter, graft extraction is performed manually using a punch, as in any standard FUE procedure. The CHOI pen is only used during the implantation phase, where it creates the incision and inserts the graft in one step.

Before / After Hair Transplants

How does a CHOI hair transplant procedure work ?

A CHOI hair transplant follows several well-defined steps. It begins with a hair diagnosis to assess the feasibility of the procedure and determine the best approach based on the patient’s needs.

On the day of the procedure, the physician extracts follicular units from the donor area, usually located at the back of the scalp. This extraction is performed using a manual or motorized punch, a precision tool that preserves follicle integrity.

The next step is implantation using the CHOI pen. Grafts are loaded one by one into the implanter and inserted directly into the recipient area. This technique allows precise control over the angle, depth, and direction of implanted hairs, ensuring a natural and harmonious result without scarring.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and lasts between 4 and 8 hours depending on the number of grafts. After the transplant, a structured post-operative follow-up is implemented to optimize regrowth and ensure long-lasting results.

What are the advantages and specific features of the CHOI transplant ?

The CHOI hair transplant offers several advantages that explain its growing popularity. First, this technique minimizes graft handling, improving graft survival rates and promoting better hair regrowth.

Direct implantation with the CHOI pen reduces scalp trauma, leading to less bleeding and faster recovery. Additionally, the precision of the implanter allows optimal control of implantation depth and angle, ensuring a natural result.

This method is particularly suitable for procedures without complete shaving of the recipient area, although shaving is often recommended for optimal results. The CHOI implanter allows graft insertion between existing hairs with high precision, reducing the risk of damaging existing follicles. Another key advantage is that it leaves no visible scarring.

However, this technique requires a high level of expertise and may take longer to perform than other implantation methods such as Sapphire blade implantation, which can impact the overall cost of the procedure.

Q&A

No, the pain is minimal.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, preventing pain during the operation. After the procedure, mild discomfort may occur, but it is generally well managed with standard pain relief medication.

Initial results appear after a few months.

A shedding phase typically occurs 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. New hair growth begins around the 3rd to 4th month, and final results are visible after approximately 12 months.

The CHOI implanter allows incision and implantation in a single step.

The Sapphire blade requires two steps: incision followed by implantation using forceps. Both are implantation techniques.

Although the CHOI implanter is effective in many cases, it is not suitable for all hair types.

The choice of technique depends on several factors, including hair texture, the area to be treated, and the patient’s aesthetic goals.
