5 Hair Myths
Between trends shared on TikTok and old wives’ tales, there is no shortage of hair care tips. However, not all of them are created equal, and some are not always suited to our hair, its natural characteristics, or its needs.
In this article, we take a look at 5 common hair myths to separate fact from fiction and finally adopt the right habits on a daily basis.
Cutting your hair regularly makes it grow faster
Sebum fasting is beneficial for hair growth
The more oil treatments you do, the better
Green clay: the essential detox treatment
Washing your hair every day is necessary to keep it healthy
1. Cutting your hair regularly makes it grow faster
Answer: No!
This is probably one of the most well-known hair myths, yet it is indeed false. Hair growth rate depends on several factors:
- Genetics
- Age
- Hormones
- Overall health
In conclusion, cutting your hair every 5 to 6 weeks will have no impact on how quickly it grows. Why? Because stimulating hair growth literally means targeting the roots, for example by performing scalp massages or gentle scalp exfoliation.
As you may have guessed, cutting your hair will not give you Rapunzel-like locks. On the other hand, it will help remove as many split ends as possible, which weaken the ends of your hair and contribute to splitting. We therefore recommend regular trims, just enough to maintain your length and keep your hair healthy.
2. Sebum fasting is beneficial for hair growth
Answer: Not really…
Despite the many habits that became popular during lockdown in 2020, sebum fasting is not actually beneficial for your hair. No scientific study has demonstrated its benefits. However, many doctors and hair care experts warn about its potential drawbacks. When sebum builds up on the scalp, it can clog pores and cause irritation. Over time, this can lead to other issues, such as psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis.
That is why it is important to keep your scalp healthy and free from impurities by using suitable shampoos and hair care products. If you want to take care of your scalp, you can opt for targeted treatments such as Zaffiro or light therapy. These treatments help promote hair follicle renewal and encourage regrowth.
3. The more oil treatments you do, the better
Answer: No.
Depending on your hair type, an oil treatment can be beneficial when done correctly! Forget about using excessive amounts of product: choose suitable oils and use them sparingly, such as jojoba oil or avocado oil, which are ideal for dry or oilier scalps.
However, if done too often, oil treatments can have the opposite effect. When used incorrectly, they can weigh the hair down, prevent the scalp from breathing properly, and contribute to the appearance of small bumps in some people.
The conclusion? Oil treatments can be beneficial for your hair, but only if you don’t overdo them! The scalp is a sensitive environment that can easily become unbalanced, especially after repeated oil applications. We recommend doing an oil treatment once every 2 to 3 weeks and making sure to shampoo your hair twice afterwards to ensure that your scalp stays healthy.
4. Green clay: the essential detox treatment
Answer: Yes, but under certain conditions.
Known for its many benefits, green clay can be an invaluable ally. Thanks to its absorbent and purifying properties, it is recommended for hair that tends to become greasy. After a green clay mask, the roots feel lighter and the hair looks healthier.
So, green clay is a good option, but only for hair that tends to become greasy! If your hair is already dry or fragile, it is best to avoid it, as it could damage the hair and cause itching.
5. Washing your hair every day is necessary to keep it healthy
Answer: No!
If you wash your hair every day, you risk stripping it of its natural sebum, which is essential for protecting the hair fiber. Your hair may then become greasy more quickly because, to compensate for this loss, it can produce more sebum.
As mentioned above, it is very important to maintain a healthy scalp. To do so, you need to choose the right shampoo for your hair type and the specific issue you want to address (oily roots, itchy scalp, need for hydration, etc.).
Generally speaking, it is recommended to wash your hair twice a week, compared with once a week for textured hair. Opt for shampoos that are free from ammonium compounds, silicones, sulfates, and fragrances to help prevent potential irritation.
